Displacement and natural disasters: an overview from the years

Natural disasters are a great, overwhelming and uncontrollable factor that contributes significantly to people being displaced all over the world.

What are the most terrifying natural disasters you have heard of? Have you or your friends and family ever directly or indirectly been affected by any terrifying natural disasters?

With climate change and global warming getting the world all topsy turvy, we really have no idea of what could happen next or when.

Over the years, floods, hurricanes, landslides etc. have resulted in a great number of deaths, and human displacement. Below is a highlight of some of the worst natural disasters the world has ever witnessed.

The 1931 china floods

This natural disaster claimed between 1,000,000 to 4,000,000 lives. At least 25 million people were estimated to have been affected by the flood, and it is usually ranked number one on the list of the most shocking natural disasters. The date was July 1931.

The 1887 yellow river flood

This natural disaster was estimated to have claimed between 900,00 to 2,000,000 lives, and also took place in China. It is usually ranked number 2 on the list of the world's deadliest natural disasters. The date was September 1887. Over two million people were estimated to have been left homeless by the flood.

The 1556 Shaanxi earthquake

This natural disaster also took place in China, and was estimated to have claimed up to 830,00 lives. More than 60% of the people in the earthquake’s location were killed off. The date was January 23, 1556. The property damage was incalculable.

The 1970 Bhola cyclone

this natural disaster took place in East Pakistan, which is now known as Bangladesh. This tragic occurrence was estimated to have claimed up to 500,000 lives.it is 4th on the list of the world's deadliest natural disasters. The date was November 3, 1970.

The 2010 Haiti earthquake

This natural disaster was estimated to have claimed up to 316,000 lives, and takes up number 5 on the list of the world's deadliest natural disasters. The date was January 12, 2010.

The 1839 India cyclone and the 1737 Calcutta cyclone

These natural disasters were estimated to have claimed up to 300,00 lives combined, and they take-up the number 6 and 7 spots on the list of the world’s deadliest natural disasters. The dates of both disasters were November 25, 1839, and October 7, 1737, respectively.

The 1920 haiyyuan earthquake in china

This natural disaster was estimated to have claimed up to 273,400 lives, and takes up the number 8 spot on the list of some of the world’s deadliest natural disasters. The date was December 16, 1920.

The 526 Antioch earthquake

this natural disaster took place in the byzantine empire now known as turkey, and was estimated to have claimed between 250,000 to 300,000 thousand lives. It takes up the number 9 spot on the list of the world's deadliest natural disasters. The date was May 526.

The 1976 Tangshan earthquake

This natural disaster took place once again in china, and was estimated to have claimed between 242,769-655,000 lives. It takes up our final spot on the list of the top ten naturals disasters that shook the world. The date was July 28,1976.
